Goody’s (IoT) In-Store Interactive Ordering Table

The project’s target was to create an interactive table for the in-store customers of the fast food chain which will enable them to browse the product catalogue, select their desired products, add them to their basket an perform the payment flow, thus completing their order e2e.

A custom table was built, with a glass touch screen which accommodated the User Interface and an Arduino device was installed in order to provide server-side communication between the online application and the POS present.

The client would navigate through the products through an intuitive UI, add them to the basket, perform checkout and payment on the spot via the contactless POS present on the lower end of the table. The installation would be able to host simultaneously 2 persons.

This was an extremely complex project. It included the design of the table from scratch. Proper materials had to be chosen (wood, glass, touch screens) in order to accommodate user functionality and in parallel maintain the dining experience.

Software packages had to be designed and implemented for the separate items of the architectural concept. The online application which hosts the User Interface and the connectivity with the online ordering system of the store, and the Arduino device which handles the communication between the app and POS.

Several hours of testing were needed in order to ensure uninterrupted operation, high availability and real-time response times. A first Pilot was run at a flagship store in the centre of Athens, with the second phase including the installation in 10 more sites.

Overall, a unique experience in all aspects of technology and the ways in which the digital and physical worlds can be connected and interact with each other by the use of Internet-Enabled Devices.
